This new coronavirus emanates from a family of viruses known to affect the respiratory system and cause respiratory infections. However, this particular coronavirus’s characteristic is unique for its high rate of transmission and relatively high fatality rate compared to the flu viral disease. At this time, there are no known vaccines or specific treatments against it, hence the best way to fight the virus is containment.

    Joint statement on the current epidemics of new Coronavirus

    Coronavirus - what is it? In December 2019, a cluster of pneumonia cases was reported in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, linked to be caused by a novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2, leading to COVID-19 disease). Coronaviruses are common in many different animal species and it is rare that they infect people and spread between them, but it happens. Recent examples include Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV—Cov, for coronavirus), and Middle-East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV). The SARS-CoV-2 is distinct from the previous two coronaviruses and causes COVID-19 disease.
